I’m sure most of you have a favorite game that you play on your phone or your tablet. Mine is a fashion game. In it, you get a doll (very realistic, doesn’t look like a cartoon) and you dress her for different functions or events that she is going to. You also get to do her hair and makeup. It’s about the only game I play because I love fashion and makeup. The clothes you dress the dolls in are actually real clothes that you can buy. They are creations of Rachel Zoe, Zimmerman, and many other top designers. It’s fun picking out her clothes for the event and her hairstyle and makeup, but I have noticed that some of the dresses are more and more becoming very immodest. Lace dresses with no lining like the one this famous young lady is wearing. I see no reason for a woman wearing a dress like this. It would be a beautiful dress if it had a lining. Bridal dresses like this are becoming quite popular as well.
A woman should have more respect for herself than to have to go out and show off her body by wearing clothes that are barely there. Watch an episode of Say Yes To The Dress and you will see what I mean. I love the show, but sometimes the brides go too far. Many, when asked what they want, they will say they want a dress that is unique, will show off their curves, have it with see through material, and they want it to show off her breasts and be “very sexy”. The more revealing the better.
Ladies, God made us to be what we are. Yes, we are to look our best, but He wants us to give our best to His service and He doesn’t care what we look like. Why? Because He created us to be what we are. We look the way He designed us to look. He thinks we are beautiful. And He loves us so very much! Look what He did for us! He gave His Son to die for us! So that we could be redeemed and be with Him.
Society constantly forces women (and men too) to be beautiful. America has a strict code of what is beautiful and what is not. Women in America are constantly bombarded by television and magazines to look better than they are, to be obsessed with their weight, have perfectly straight white teeth, to wear the right clothes and jewelry, have the right job, drive the right kind of car and live in the right kind of house. Women are under a lot of pressure to be thin. A lot of overweight women have lap band surgery or something similar to lose weight, which can be very dangerous even deadly! One of my friends had the surgery and died. Is it worth it ladies, to risk your life just to be thin?
So many actors and actresses have had plastic surgery. Some have it while they are still in their twenties! Why? Because they have been told they are not beautiful enough, or they lost a role because another woman looked the part, was thinner and beautiful, but lately, we are shown so many actresses after they’ve had something done to their faces and they look so unnatural, so…I hate to say it…so plastic. Their looks are gone. Some of them will never act again in a decent role. It’s sad really. They were so beautiful naturally yet they felt they weren’t beautiful enough and now they never will be as beautiful again. You can almost always tell now when someone has had work done, there is just something not right about them. I pray it was worth it for them, as it cost them so much!
God designed us. He formed us in our mother’s womb, He knew us before we formed, His design is perfect. ( Psalm 139:13-16), Whether we are fat, skinny, ugly, beautiful, white, black, green or purple. He knew us. Yes, we can change the color of our hair, have our wrinkles removed, wear makeup, expensive clothing, as we are to look our best. But that does not mean we are to reveal all of ourselves to all the world, flaunting our bodies to anyone and everyone we can.
Here are some questions to ask yourself before you go out in some piece of material masquerading as a dress:
• Is your self-worth governed by what you wear?
• Are you willing to compromise you values, your morals, by wearing revealing clothes?
• Is lowering your standards and morals to be more popular because of what you are barely wearing?
• You know a guy you like a lot but the only time you can get him to even look at you is if you wear revealing clothes. Is he really worth it? Don’t you know you are just “arm candy” until the next one comes along? And there will be a next one.
• How far are you willing to go to get what you want (a job, a man, popularity, etc.)?
• Is it worth it to gain a high social status (it won’t last long)
• Do you want to succeed in life by hard work, intelligence and talents, or do you want to succeed in life because you wear revealing clothes?
• How long can you keep it up before it becomes clear that eventually what you’ve accomplished will not last because you gained them the wrong way?
Ladies, God wants us to succeed in life, He wants what is best for us, but you will not get it if you go around half dressed and using your bodies to try to get what you want. If you do get it, it will not last long. God expects us to dress modestly.
“Your beauty should not consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold ornaments or fine clothes. Instead, it should consist of what is inside the heart with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very valuable in God’s eyes.” 1 Peter 3:3-4 (HCSB)
“Also, the women are to dress themselves in modest clothing, with decency and good sense, not with elaborate hairstyles, gold, pearls, or expensive apparel” 1 Timothy 2:9 (HCSB)
God is very clear in His Word how we are to dress. He is saying here that not only does it degrade you to wear such clothing, it is not pleasing to Him. He wants us to dress in modest clothes, meaning nothing that reveals what should not be seen by anyone but your husband. This is decency. He expects you to use good sense when you buy clothing and when you wear it. Ask yourself if God would approve of the dress or outfit you are about to wear.
Women used to adorn their hair to please the gods (not the Holy God). You don’t need to do these things to please God. God sees your heart and what He should see in it, a quiet spirit, calm and gentle, this is what is valuable to God. We should be God pleasing, not man pleasing.
And decent men will not be beguiled by your revealing clothing. He will be repulsed. And ladies, even the men who like it are not thinking very good things about you. To him you are beautiful, but cheap. And for him you will do until someone else takes your place. Which kind of man do you want?
Now, I am going to say something that may offend you. Did you know that when you are causing men to look at you and lust, you are causing men to sin? Yes, they are sinning when they look at you with lust in their eyes.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart’” ~Matthew 5:27-28 (NIV)
“Woe to the world because of offenses. For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes.” ~ Matthew 18:7 (HCSB)
You can see here that yes, you have indeed caused them to sin. And by doing so you have committed a greater sin in doing it. His offense will come through you. Think about that. Woe to you…“this is bad”. But if you come to Christ, He will forgive you and this sin. You must sincerely repent and begin to serve Him. Not yourself.
Parents, be careful what your daughter is wearing. Prom is coming up and
I’ve looked at some of the prom dresses…..wow! Not what we wore in my day. Your daughter can be beautiful without wearing a revealing dress.
Now, what do you think this young man has on his mind? And now your daughter may end up fighting off the young man or worse be raped by him. Her classmates may call her bad names, unless they’re dressed just as bad. So:
1.) Have you have let your daughter dress provocatively,
2.) This has caused him to sin (Matthew 5:27-28),
3.) This has caused her to sin (because she willingly wore it),
4.) This has caused you to sin because all of the above is on you and you will have to answer for it if you do not repent. (Matthew 18:7) And this does not let off the young man’s parents either because:
1.) You let him go out with a girl dressed so provocatively, possibly causing Matthew 5:27-28: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
2.) This has caused him to sin,
3). If she gives in to his sexual advances (if he makes them), you have caused her to sin because you let him go out with her, and
4.) This has caused you to sin because all of the above is on you and you will have to answer for it unless you repent (Matthew 18:7).
And both the young man and woman aren’t off the hook either. They are old enough to know what is sin and what is not. Yet if she wears the dress, she has disobeyed God (1 Timothy 2:9; 1 Peter 3:3-4), if he lusts after her, that is a sin (Matthew 5:27-28) and if they have sex that is sin (Exodus 20:24). You have then caused your children to stumble and woe to you (Matthew 18:7).
And it does not matter if everybody does it. That is not an excuse to say you can sin too. And times have changed down through the centuries but until God says this is not sin, it still is sin. God never changes and He will never change His Word. And trust me, God keeps His Word. Because He is the Word.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1 (NIV)
Motives should be questioned before you decide to wear revealing clothes. Do you wear it to succeed in your job, to advance? Do you wear it to make other women jealous? Do you wear it to try and get a man you want? Do you wear it to show off your body? Do you wear it because you believe it will help you climb the social ladder?
What constitutes revealing clothing?
• Low necklines showing most of the breast
• Short dresses, skirts and shorts nearly showing your bottom
• Clothing showing the mid-riff area
• One piece swim wear that reveals too much of the bottom and breasts and those which show your mid-riff area
• Not wearing panties with your dress, skirt or shorts. This is disgusting. It is not beautiful at all. It is indecent. The same goes for a thong under a dress or skirt and even short shorts. You can still see everything.
Ladies, God wants you to respect yourselves. He doesn’t want us to cheapen ourselves. If you are His you are disobeying His commands. Repent and follow Him and His ways. Much harm can come with wearing such clothing:
• Rape, including date rape
• death (some rapists kill their victims)
• fear (after being assaulted and afraid of it happening again)
• disrespect from your peers
• being groped
• being gossiped about by other women or teens
• called names such as (forgive me here) – whore, slut, trash, tart, and other words I will not say
• be thought of as easy
• you will lose respect
Wearing such clothing is not pleasing to God. His Word plainly expresses this, as we have seen. Christian ladies, do you want to please God or man?
|Pleasing God||Pleasing man|
|Values you as you are||Values you because of your body|
|Will always love you||Will “love” you as long as you are desirable|
|Will always be there for you||Will always put himself first
|Will never let you down||Will continually let you down
|Will give you your hearts desire||Will give you only his hearts desire|
|Will not make you degrade yourself||Will expect you to continually degrade yourself for himself|
Look carefully at the chart above. Which do you prefer? Ladies, young and older, God is eternal. He keeps His Word. He never changes. Men cannot do that for you. Neither can sex, money, fame, material things, nothing can do that for you. Put your faith and trust in Christ, repent and serve Him with your life. Build up your treasure in heaven, because that is where Christ is.
“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Matthew 6:20
Any treasure here can be destroyed, stolen or lost. Nothing you accumulate down here in the flesh will last. But the treasure you accumulate in heaven will be forever yours.
The Bible tells of a pearl of great price:
“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.” ~Matthew 13:46-47 (KJV)
You are to God, a pearl of great price. For you, He sent His precious Son to die for you. Nothing else was more valuable to Him. He gave all that He had to give you all that He has – eternal life, the treasures you stored up in Heaven, and to be reconciled to Him forever. Christ is our greatest Treasure. Our greatest Hope.
I pray you consider these things and search the Scriptures prayerfully. If you have any questions I would be more than happy to help you. Choose wisely. The wrong decision may cost you everything.
Grace and Peace,
